Most people are no longer naming their dogs Fido, Spot and Patches. With pets being considered members of the family, many dogs – and cats – are being given human names. As a matter of fact, in a recent survey, 90 per cent of Canadians consider their dog as a family member, with 40 per cent calling themselves their dog’s mom or dad. The feeling for cat owners is equally strong.
For the most part, the most popular pet names are gathered from pet insurance registrations, microchip registrations, and breed registries. The 10 most popular dog names are Bella, Charlie, Max, Lucy, Molly, Bailey, Daisy, Lola, Buddy and Maggie. The 10 most popular cat names are Bella, Max, Oliver, Charlie, Lucy, Chloe, Shadow, Lily, Jack and Simba. As you can see, many of the cat names are similar to the dog names.
However, according to another survey, the 10 most popular cat names in Quebec are of the French variety: Minou, Grisou, Ti-Mine, Félix, Caramel, Mimi, Pacha, Charlotte, Minette and Chanel. Nine of these ten popular French cat names have been the same for 15 years. Only the order of the popularity has changed.
We can’t forget about our feathered friends. Although, their names aren’t quite human, the top 10 favorite bird names are cute anyway. Those names are Charlie, Angel, Skittles, Baby, Bogart, Coco, Jet, Kiwi, Max and Me.
Reptiles and fish are common pets as well. Two popular reptile names are Darwin or Godzilla. Two popular fish names are Sushi and Bubbles. Again, these are not human names, but they are cute and fitting for the type of pet.
Matching your pet’s type, genre and personality should be helpful aids to naming your pet based on these lists of pet names. Enjoy this fun process of pet ownership.
